Book it: Everybody Loves Pizza

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Everybody Loves Pizza is a quick (144 photo filled pages) and fun primer on pizza. If you’re a casual pizza fan who wants to take your love to the next level, this is the book for you.

The book starts with the origins of pizza, but quickly moves on to pizza today using the four main regional pizza styles in the US (New York, New Haven, Chicago and California) as guide posts. Each style is given fair treatment (that is to say the authors don’t play favorites) and the origins are pretty thoroughly discussed.

Next, the book moves on to making your own pizza — beginning with a fairly rudimentary breakdown of the ingredients you’ll need. A great selection of recipes follows covering a wide range of toppings and styles (including a representative from each of the “guide post” styles). I have my eye on the pepperoni pizza recipe submitted by Mario Batali.

Finally, the authors provide their personal top 10 list and finish up with a listing of 546 pizza places worth hitting (at least one for every state). I wish I had read it before my recent trip to New Orleans.

There are certainly more exhaustive works on the subject available, but Everybody Loves Pizza is a good read that I would recommend to anyone who is looking to begin their pizza education.
